Horseshoe Bend Hike Description

The Horseshoe Bend hike in Glen Canyon is a relatively short and rewarding trek that offers one of the most stunning views in Canyon Country. The trail is approximately ¾ mile (1.2 km) round trip and is well-maintained, making it accessible for most visitors, including those using wheelchairs.

Starting from the parking area, the trail climbs gently before descending towards the edge of Glen Canyon. Along the way, hikers are treated to sweeping desert vistas and can find relief from the sun at two shaded rest areas. The final stretch of the hike leads to a dramatic viewpoint where the Colorado River forms a horseshoe-shaped bend around a towering rock formation.

The viewing area provides breathtaking views of the river as it winds through the canyon, flanked by sheer 700-foot-tall walls. The sheer scale and natural beauty of the landscape make this a popular destination, often drawing visitors from around the world, some years drawing more people than the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Parking is available for a fee—$5 for motorcycles and $10 for cars or motorhomes. There is no parking allowed on Highway 89, and vehicles parked illegally will be towed. While water is available for purchase on-site for $1, it’s advisable to bring plenty of your own, especially in the hot desert climate.
