Lees Ferry Historic River Trail Hike Description

The Lees Ferry Historic River Trail is the perfect blend of natural beauty and the convoluted history of the Wild West. This 1.6-mile out-and-back trail follows the Colorado River, delivering stellar views of Glen Canyon, the Echo Peaks, the Paria Plateau and Grand Canyon National Park in the distance.

The trail begins at Lees Ferry. This place was a pivotal location in the history of the American West, known for being the only river crossing for hundreds of miles in either direction. As you walk, you’ll encounter century-old rock cabins that once housed pioneers and prospectors, providing a glimpse into their challenging lives. These abandoned structures, alongside the remains of an old paddle wheeler resting on the river’s edge, evoke the era of the gold rush and the rugged determination of early settlers.

The well-maintained trail is a delightful exploration of both history and scenery. For the first 0.6 miles, the path leads to the ferry crossing area, offering a glimpse into the area’s past and picturesque views of the river. The trail continues for an additional mile, inviting those who wish to extend their hike and enjoy even more of the striking landscape.

Informational signs along the trail provide context and details about the artifacts and historical elements you encounter, enriching your understanding of the region’s past. At Lees Ferry, you’ll also find amenities such as bathrooms and a shaded picnic area, making it a convenient spot for a break.

Additionally, Lees Ferry serves as the launch point for Grand Canyon river trips. Watching the preparation of rafts for these epic journeys, which traverse 280 miles of some of North America’s most challenging whitewater rapids, adds an exciting element to your visit. The Lees Ferry Historic River Trail offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and adventure, making it a must-visit destination in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
