Lees Ferry Road Hoodoos
These fascinating geologic phenomena known as hoodoos beckon you to pull over just after entering Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on Lee’s Ferry Road. A short meandering stroll through these balanced rocks will leave you awestruck by the power of erosion. They will be on the left side of the road as you enter Glen Canyon National Recreation Area two miles after the turn off at Marble Canyon on Highway 89A.
What is a Hoodoo?
A hoodoo is a tall, narrow rock spire formed by differential erosion, where harder caprock protects softer underlying sedimentary layers from weathering. Many Indigenous cultures regard hoodoos as places of spiritual significance or ancestral presence, though geologically they are understood as natural landforms shaped by long-term physical and chemical processes rather than sources of measurable “energy.”
