House Rock Valley Road Description:

House Rock Valley Road is a thirty mile long, maintained dirt road, that cuts its way through a cleft in the earth from Highway 89 in Southern Utah to Scenic Byway 89A in Northern Arizona. One side of the valley is created by the buckled limestone monocline of the Kaibab Plateau and the other showcases the red sandstone formations of the Paria Plateau. The views are magnificent and ever changing throughout the whole route and many attractions lay along the way. Discover sweeping views of towering cliffs, ancient rock formations, and expansive desert vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. Whether you’re an avid hiker, photographer, or simply seeking a serene escape, House Rock Valley Road beckons with its untamed wilderness and unique blend of desert and mountain ecosystems. This loop drive is a perfect full day outing from Page with possible stops at hikes like The Toadstools, Wire Pass, Maze Rock and Navajo Bridge. There is a restaurant in Marble Canyon that can be a nice spot to have dinner before heading back home to Page.

This improved gravel road is suitable for two wheel dive vehicles but you should expect areas of washboard bumps that’ll rattle your fillings right out of your teeth!

!!CAUTION!! This road can become impassable for even 4×4 rigs when it gets wet. Do not attempt to drive this road in wet conditions. Buckskin Gulch is prone to flash flooding during the monsoon season and can prevent passage for periods of time. Most of the road is devoid of cell service, so a rescue could be many hours away if you get stuck. If you are unsure of the road conditions you can check with the Big Water Visitors Center 435-675-3200 or The Paria Contact Station (435) 689-0801.

House Rock Valley Road offers outstanding opportunities for camping, hiking, photography, and birding in one of the most remote and scenic areas of northern Arizona and southern Utah. This rugged dirt road and popular 4×4 route provides access to trailheads for Buckskin Gulch, Wire Pass, and Paria Canyon, as well as dispersed camping and established sites like State Line Campground near the Arizona–Utah border. Photographers are drawn to the dramatic Vermilion Cliffs, historical sites such as Maze Rock, and Kaibab Plateau, while birders can visit the nearby California Condor viewing site for a chance to see these massive birds soaring above the canyon country outdoors.
