Trip Overview

Radio Towers Road is an 18-mile out-and-back 4×4 route north of Page, Arizona that transitions from soft sand and slickrock to deeper washes and rocky sections, requiring careful driving and air-down for traction. The road leads to a rim-edge overlook known locally as Dominguez Overlook with views of the Colorado River and surrounding country, with multiple vantage points along the top and optional side roads to explore.

Type of Road: 4×4

Length: 18 miles out and back

Difficulty: Full size truck = Difficult ~ ATV = Moderate

Terrain: Deep Soft Sand, Rock Crawling

Destination: Overlook

Elevation Gain: 1,100 feet

Directions to the Road:

The road is accessed off Highway 89, a quarter mile west of Glen Canyon Bridge, across from the Wahweap South Entrance. After turning, make an immediate right and pass the Beehive Campground on your right. The road curves left around the mesa and soon turns to 4×4 soft sand. Enjoy moderate downhill terrain for a few miles until you reach a rocky section where you’ll curve right over sandstone. After this, you’ll come to a fork with BLM signage; take the right fork under the power lines and follow it to the slickrock mesa. Contour the mesa for several miles and explore the interesting caverns weathered into the ridgeline. You’ll then enter the main wash, encountering EXTREMELY SOFT SAND for half a mile, requiring you to keep your engine revved and speed up to avoid getting stuck—airing down your tires is recommended. At the end of the sand wash, turn left onto Radio Towers Road..

Drive Description:

This is an epic local drive that is a must do! The terrain is fun to drive and the destination is five-star. For the truck driver this route will keep you on your toes the whole way and for the side by side guy there are a plethora of offshoot roads that will fill your heart with delight. There is one section once you get to the cliff line (labeled “Rock Crawling” in the map above) that is pretty burly and will test the clearance of most full size trucks and you should take caution at this spot. Once you get on top there are three different view points that are all worth checking out on the rim’s edge. One of the overlooks is called Dominguez Overlook by the locals. Keep an eye out for Big Horn Sheep when you get up near the rim.
